2021 Spring Sports Preview

After a short few weeks without sports and a long year without spring sports as a whole, five Mineral Point and Dodge Point teams will hit the field in the upcoming weeks, set to begin their first seasons since the 2019 season and long hiatus following the cancellation of the 2020 spring season. Today, we are going to be quickly previewing each team’s season. I’m Matthew Goninen, and this is the Blue Crew Bulletin.

Baseball

One common story that we will be seeing across the High School sports sphere this spring season, is the youth of each roster. With the 2019 and 2020 senior classes both graduated, younger players will be getting some big opportunities right away this year. The baseball team has been very successful over the course of the past two seasons, even making it to the WIAA State Championship game in 2019. This year, the baseball team will look to continue their prior success this season, retaining some underclassmen from 2019 that look to step up big in 2021.

Track and Field

Having found success over the past few years in many track runs and field events, the Dodge Point Track and Field team is no strange to success. However, with lot’s of new players coming in, the team will look to come together to add to that history of success in SWC and WIAA competition, beginning with their meet in Richland Center at the end of April.

Softball

While they haven’t made it back to state since the championship run in 2013, the Pointer Softball team’s success is nothing to pass over. Last season, the girls added more plaques to the collection, taking home the SWAL Conference Championship and the WIAA Regional Championship. Individually, the team had many players taking home various All-SWAL honors, including Player and Coach of the Year. As with every other sport, it’s time to find the next players up for the Softball team as they look to make a push deep in the playoffs yet again.

Golf

The Mineral Point Golf team has been arguable, one of the most consistently excellent teams in recent MP sports history, taking home the past five SWAL Conference Titles in a row. That’s quite the feat. Now, with many new players, the Golf team looks to continue its streak of success by bringing home yet another conference title. The golf team will actually be one of the first two of the five spring sports teams to begin play, with their first invitational taking place on April 24th.

Girl’s Soccer

Finally, we head to Dodgeville to look at what lies ahead for the DP United Girls Soccer squad. This team had quite a successful season when they last took to the pitch in the spring of 2019. Finishing near the top of the SWC with many players being recognized for their accomplishments, individually, this Girl’s Soccer team will look to make a deep push in the playoffs and convert that base level of success into bigger things.

Regardless, everybody can agree that it will be great to have spring sports back in full swing over the course of the next few weeks. For coverage of MP and DP sports, be sure to follow @mpbluecrew on Instagram and Twitter and stay tuned to pointermedia.org.
