The Mineral Point High School Math Team recently kicked off their first competition of the 2021-22 school year with the annual UW-Platteville Math Competition. While the competition was not held last year due to COVID-19, it was held virtually this year. Mineral Point, one of the eight teams that competed in Division 3, brought a team of 28 students. Students were broken into two levels, Level 1 being freshman and sophomores and Level 2 being juniors and seniors. Firstly, students received an individual test. Individual award winners are selected based on their scores on the individual test. This year, both Anthony Luu and Bobby Allbright received this award and were given medals and UW-Platteville t-shirts.

Then, a team test that students work on with others at their level was administered. Final team scores are determined by factoring in all individual results from team members and the final result of the team test scores. Mineral Point’s Blue Team tied for second place in Division 3. Members include Matthew Goninen, Julianna Cool, Anthony Buleje Cadena, Regan Schuette, Malea Aschliman, Abigail Webb, Derek Hottenstein, Tyler Nordstrom, Cole Ferrell, Griffin Albaugh, Joey Robinson, Jared Wedig, Drew Hottenstein, and Callie Pierce. Team Blue’s second-place finish was the highest finish from a Mineral Point team since 2017, when the Pointers also had a team finish in second place at this competition. Next, the MPHS Math Team will compete in the Mathematical Association of America High School Mathematics Contest on December 2nd. Math Team is coached by Mrs. Nothem and Mr. McWilliams.
