Friday night Pointer Wrestlers went to Iowa Grant High School to face a good challenge. The Mineral Point Wrestling Team put up a good fight against Iowa-Grant/Highland but ended up falling with a score of 28-39. To start off the night, Tarrin Rielly at 138 took a win over Caden Linder scoring 9 – 0. This win got the team excited and ready for the next match. Senior, Ross Lindsey, walked out onto the mat wanting a win. Lindsey got his win, scoring 5-2 over Treyton Starkey. The team lost the next couple of matches at the weights of 152 and 160. After those losses, the boys knew they needed to redeem themselves. Bo Hanson at 170 took on Darren Laufenberg sweeping him away with a score of 11-2. After that, the matches only got more challenging. The Pointers took some losses at 182, 220, and 106 including two forfeits at the weights of 195 and 285. Freshman Roen Carey knew that his team was in need of points. Roen was facing the #1 ranked kid in his weight class, so he knew he was going to have to work hard. The gym filled with noise as Roen moved quickly and smartly during his match. In conclusion, Carey pinned his opponent at the last second. Junior Carson Kroll had a great match against Jackson McGuire. Kroll tech falled him at 17 – 1. Excitement ran through the team as Lucas Sullivan walked onto the mat knowing he had to win. Sullivan took the pin! The Pointers end up falling at the last weight and heading back home with lots of knowledge on skills to work on. After the match, Roen Carey states “I feel very well on how I wrestled in these past matches, but my goal is to be a champ at 106. Team-wise we are missing a couple weights so I don’t know our odds at the moment, but I just hope and wish for our team as a whole to keep a great attitude, and if we can do that I think our team will be just fine.” Make sure to come support the wrestling team at Cuba City on Friday!
