SHERMAN OAKS, CA – A quick-thinking teenager is being hailed as a hero after waking his family and fighting off a suspicious 3:00 a.m. brush fire that came within feet of destroying multiple homes.
Midnight Wake-Up Call
Thirteen-year-old Myron Tkechenko was sleeping on the couch during a weekend sleepover when he was startled awake by a crackling sound outside his family’s Hesby Street home.
Recognizing the danger immediately, Tkechenko prioritized getting his family out. Within minutes, he woke everyone up, allowing them to evacuate safely and move their vehicles out of the flames’ path.
Father and Son Fight the Flames
Surveillance footage from a neighbor’s house captured the intense moments following the evacuation. Tkechenko and his father quickly leaped into action on their own to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby properties.
While the teen rapidly filled pots with water inside, his father used them to douse the flames, successfully containing the blaze just feet away from their house and several neighboring homes before it could escalate into a tragedy.
Suspicious Origins Spark Community Outrage
The neighborhood watch captain, Penny Johnson, reviewed security footage from her 16-camera system. The video shows an unidentified person pushing a shopping cart, stopping by the bushes precisely when the fire broke out, looking at the flames, and then walking away.
The incident has highlighted growing safety concerns among Sherman Oaks residents regarding recent vandalism and local crime.
Demands for Action
While the community is incredibly grateful for Tkechenko’s quick thinking, neighbors remain on edge. Local residents are currently gathering additional security footage from surrounding blocks to help authorities identify the individual seen in the video. Community leaders are urging the city council and the mayor to work together to address ongoing neighborhood safety issues.
