Queens, New York – A devastating four-alarm house fire in Elmhurst claimed the life of a 34-year-old mother and, days later, authorities confirmed the tragic discovery of her missing 17-day-old daughter. The blaze, which broke out Monday evening, also injured seven others and displaced dozens of residents.
According to the New York City Police Department, the fire began around 6:45 p.m. on Feb. 9 inside a residential building in the Queens neighborhood. The woman who died has been identified as Miguelina Alcantara. Her newborn daughter, Emma Alcantara, was initially reported missing in the aftermath of the fire.
Fire officials described the incident as intense and fast-moving. New York City Fire Department Chief of Department John Esposito explained that crews encountered heavy flames on the first floor that were rapidly spreading throughout the structure. Firefighters immediately began search-and-rescue operations as conditions worsened.
In a desperate attempt to escape the fire, three people jumped from the rear of the building. Two additional individuals were rescued from upper-floor windows using ladders. During the response, one firefighter fell through a hole on the first floor and had to be rescued by fellow crew members.
Due to deteriorating conditions and structural instability, officials made the difficult decision to pull firefighters out of the building and transition to an exterior operation. About an hour later, emergency crews received information that a mother and child were missing and had last been seen in the cellar.
Firefighters reentered the building through a cellar entrance because the front of the structure was inaccessible due to fire damage. Inside, they faced four feet of freezing water and signs of partial structural collapse. After an extensive search, Miguelina Alcantara’s body was located. However, her newborn daughter could not immediately be found.
Search efforts continued through the early morning hours and throughout Tuesday. On Wednesday, crews returned with heavy equipment to clear debris and stabilize the scene. Later that afternoon, officials confirmed the heartbreaking discovery of Emma Alcantara’s body.
Authorities reported that a 22-year-old man remains hospitalized in critical condition. Six other victims, ranging in age from 10 to 67, were treated and are listed in stable condition. The city’s medical examiner will determine the official cause of the mother’s death. The origin and cause of the fire remain under active investigation.
The fire also severely damaged two neighboring homes and left approximately 45 people homeless. Officials noted that the destroyed property was certified as a two-family residence but did not have a permit for a basement apartment.
Local leaders described the tragedy as deeply heartbreaking, citing the loss of a young mother and her newborn, as well as the displacement of multiple families. As the investigation continues, the community remains shaken by the scale and impact of the deadly blaze.
