Mississippi Storms Leave 1 Dead in Lawrence County, Tens of Thousands Without Power; Freeze and Possible Snow Ahead

MISSISSIPPI — Severe storms that moved across the state overnight left one person dead, injured several others, and knocked out power to tens of thousands of residents early Thursday, March 12. Forecasters now warn that another cold front next week could bring below-freezing temperatures and even a chance of snow to parts of North Mississippi.

One Fatality, Multiple Injuries Reported

According to Tate Reeves, one fatality and three injuries were reported in Lawrence County as a result of the storm system.

“Mississippi is praying for the family of the lost and for a speedy recovery of those injured,” Reeves said in a statement.

Authorities have not yet released additional details about the victim.

Tens of Thousands Without Power

Data from PowerOutage.com showed that as of 3:45 a.m. Thursday, approximately 53,200 customers across Mississippi were without power. By 5:15 a.m., that number had dropped to 48,195 as crews worked to restore service.

Counties reporting the highest outages included:

  • Hinds County: 6,686
  • Pike County: 6,641
  • Lincoln County: 4,465
  • Amite County: 4,022
  • Lawrence County: 2,539
  • Jefferson Davis County: 2,294

In central Mississippi, Hinds, Rankin, and Madison counties also reported significant outages.

Utility crews are continuing restoration efforts as windy conditions persist.

Heavy Rain and Strong Winds

The National Weather Service reported that areas in and near Jackson received between a half-inch and 1½ inches of rain, while portions of South Mississippi saw 2 to 3 inches.

Forecasters warn that sustained winds of 20–35 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph, may continue through Thursday morning. Strong winds could down trees and power lines and create hazardous driving conditions, particularly for high-profile vehicles.

Temperatures to Swing From 80s to Freezing

After the storm system exits, temperatures are expected to rebound temporarily.

Jackson Forecast Highlights

  • Thursday: High near 61, clearing skies
  • Friday: Sunny, high near 71
  • Saturday: High near 76
  • Sunday: High near 81

However, a new cold front is expected to move into the state Sunday night, bringing rain, thunderstorms, and sharply cooler temperatures.

By Monday and Tuesday, temperatures could dip below freezing.

North Mississippi Snow Possibility

In North Mississippi, including Oxford and Starkville, showers Sunday night could transition into possible snow showers early Monday morning.

Forecast lows include:

  • Oxford: 34 degrees Monday morning, 27 degrees Tuesday morning
  • Starkville: 28 degrees Tuesday morning
  • Southaven, Columbus, and Corinth: Slight chance of snow Monday morning

Meteorologists caution that while snowfall amounts remain uncertain, below-freezing temperatures are likely early next week.

Community Impact and Preparedness

Recent winter storms have already caused significant damage in parts of North Mississippi, including downed utility lines and structural damage from ice accumulation.

Residents are encouraged to:

  • Monitor updated forecasts
  • Prepare for potential freezing conditions
  • Check on vulnerable neighbors
  • Exercise caution while driving in windy or icy conditions

Emergency management officials continue to assess storm damage statewide.

Outlook for the Week Ahead

After early-week cold conditions, temperatures are expected to gradually rebound by midweek, with highs returning to the upper 60s by Wednesday.

Officials urge residents to remain weather-aware as the pattern shifts from severe storms to potential winter conditions within days.
