Massive Budget Deficit Could Force Deep Staff Cuts In Montgomery County Schools

ROCKVILLE, MD – Montgomery County public schools are facing a potential staffing crisis as the County Council prepares to vote on a Fiscal Year 2027 budget aimed at closing a staggering $189 million deficit.

90% Of Budget At Risk

Superintendent Thomas Taylor recently addressed staff in a video message, highlighting a grim reality: salaries and benefits for employees make up 90% of the school system’s total budget. With the “cost of doing business” rising—from electricity to construction—Taylor warned that a flat budget effectively acts as a cut.

“An increase each year is to be expected,” Taylor noted, emphasizing that the workforce is the district’s most significant ongoing cost.

Which Positions Are On The Chopping Block?

David Stein, President of the Montgomery County Education Association, warned that these “deep cuts” aren’t just numbers on a page—they represent vital roles within schools. Positions currently under review for elimination include:

  • Middle School Classroom Teachers
  • Social Workers & Pupil Personnel Workers
  • Staff Development Teachers
  • Media Center Assistants

Impact On Students

The potential loss of Pupil Personnel Workers (PPWs) has sparked particular concern. These professionals act as the primary bridge between home and school, ensuring students remain engaged in learning despite external challenges.

“The children don’t need any less just because there’s no revenue source,” said Julia Guillen Williams, a local PPW. Advocates argue that cutting these support roles will leave the county’s most vulnerable students without a safety net.

What’s Next?

The Montgomery County Council is expected to vote on the final budget in the coming weeks. Local educators and parents are being urged to monitor council sessions as the district grapples with how to balance the books without hollow out the classroom.
