OTTUMWA, IA – Tragavedi struck the Ottumwa community Sunday night when an 18-year-old recent graduate lost her life in a two-vehicle collision just hours after walking across the graduation stage.
Fatal Collision at US Highway 34
The Ottumwa Police Department identified the victim as Ashlin Knuth. According to authorities, the incident occurred at approximately 9:19 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, at the intersection of U.S. Highway 34 and Roemer Avenue.
Knuth was driving a 2005 Mini Cooper when it collided with a 2005 Dodge Dakota, driven by 21-year-old Nathaniel Hart. Knuth and her 18-year-old male passenger had to be extricated from the vehicle by the Ottumwa Fire Department before being rushed to the Ottumwa Regional Health Center, where Knuth later passed away.
Hart was reportedly uninjured in the crash. The current medical status of Knuth’s passenger has not been disclosed.
Community Mourns Class of 2026 Graduate
Earlier that same day, Knuth had celebrated receiving her diploma as a member of the Ottumwa High School Class of 2026. She was already taking courses at Indian Hills Community College and planned to attend the University of Northern Iowa in the fall to pursue a degree in teaching.
The Ottumwa School District released a statement expressing deep sadness:
“Our Bulldog family is hurting alongside Ashlin’s classmates, friends, teachers, coaches, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
Support Services and Funeral Arrangements
The school district announced that grief counseling and emotional support services will remain available for all students, staff, and recent graduates needing a safe space to process the loss.
Knuth is survived by her parents, Jamie and Serena Knuth, and her two brothers. Her funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, at Reece Funeral Home.
The exact cause of the crash remains under active investigation by the Ottumwa Police Department.
