Connecticut — Raaw Energy has significantly expanded its dog food recall after regulators discovered dangerous bacteria in multiple tested products and additional reports of animal illnesses surfaced, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
The expanded recall affects all Raaw Energy dog food products manufactured between July 17, 2025 and Dec. 23, 2025, along with one batch produced on March 31, 2026.
FDA Says Additional Animal Illnesses Were Reported
The recall expansion follows an earlier advisory issued in January 2026. Since then, federal officials say more pet owners have reported animals becoming sick after consuming the products.
“Since the original issuance of this advisory in January 2026, the FDA has received additional consumer complaints of illness in animals who have consumed recalled product,” the FDA stated in its notice.
According to authorities, the investigation intensified after a dog illness was reported in Connecticut, prompting testing by state agriculture departments.
Officials from the Connecticut and New Jersey departments of agriculture collected and tested eight product samples tied to the investigation.
The FDA said all eight tested positive for “pathogenic bacteria.”
Products Sold Across Multiple States
The recalled products were sold across nine states, including:
- Connecticut
- Delaware
- Massachusetts
- Maryland
- New Hampshire
- New Jersey
- New York
- Pennsylvania
- Virginia
According to the recall notice, the dog food products were packaged in 2-pound and 5-pound clear plastic tubes sealed with metal clips.
The frozen products were shipped in brown cardboard boxes containing multiple tubes, each labeled with the product flavor, ingredients and date code.
Officials have not yet confirmed whether the recall could expand further to include additional products or production dates.
Company Announces Temporary Production Shutdown
In response to the growing concerns, Raaw Energy announced it will temporarily stop all dog food production beginning May 21, 2026.
The company said the decision was made to thoroughly evaluate its manufacturing process and address sanitation concerns.
“While not all products from this period tested positive, this action is being taken out of an abundance of caution,” the company said in a press release.
Raaw Energy also acknowledged that some products made during the affected period were never tested.
“Some products produced during this timeframe were not tested, and bacterial presence was identified during the same period. As a result, products manufactured within these dates could possibly be affected.”
Facility Cleaning and Safety Improvements Planned
The company detailed several corrective actions it plans to take before resuming production.
“To better serve our customers, we will be temporarily stopping all production of dog food effective May 21, 2026. This pause is necessary so we can carefully evaluate current issues, address them properly, and take appropriate corrective actions.”
Raaw Energy said it will resurface key facility areas to improve sanitation and cleaning capabilities.
“As part of this process, we will be resurfacing key areas to make them smoother, more sanitary, and easier to clean. All drains and sewer lines will be thoroughly cleaned and treated, and additional cleaning efforts will be made on the evaporators.”
What Pet Owners Should Do
Customers who purchased the recalled products are being advised to immediately discard them or contact Raaw Energy for a refund.
Health officials also recommend monitoring pets for signs of illness if they consumed the affected food products.
The expanded recall highlights growing concerns surrounding pet food safety and bacterial contamination risks that can potentially impact both animals and humans handling the products.
