Naperville, Illinois — More than 80 years after leaving high school behind to serve during World War II, a 100-year-old veteran finally experienced the prom night he never had thanks to a heartfelt effort by local students.
Ray Svejnoha, who missed his senior prom after being called into military service during World War II, was recently honored with a special celebration organized by students at Metea Valley High School.
WWII Service Forced Teenager to Miss Prom
Svejnoha’s story resurfaced during conversations with students involved in the school’s Tech Connect club, a program that helps senior citizens with technology assistance.
While talking with students, Svejnoha shared how he never attended prom because he had been ordered to report for military duty before the big night arrived.
At the time, the future veteran said there was little room for debate about his priorities.
“When it came time for his high school prom, he ‘didn’t have too much choice,’ ” Svejnoha recalled, explaining he had already been called to serve.
Before entering the military, Svejnoha had reportedly completed examinations for both the Navy and the Army Air Force, eventually leaving behind many of the milestones typical teenagers experience.
Students Inspired to Give Veteran His Prom Night
The moment students and school staff heard Svejnoha’s story, they knew they wanted to do something special.
Carey Peterson, adviser for the Tech Connect club, said the idea immediately stood out to her.
“That’s where my little lightbulb went on,” Peterson said. “I think we can help him out with that.”
Soon, students organized a surprise promposal for the veteran.
The group arrived carrying red, white and blue balloons, American flags and a handmade sign reading:
“82 years late, but right on time.”
The emotional surprise deeply touched Svejnoha, who admitted he had never expected anyone to remember or revisit the milestone he missed decades earlier.
Veteran Says Students’ Excitement Became Contagious
Svejnoha explained that although he had rarely thought about missing prom over the years, the students’ enthusiasm changed everything.
“After I heard them, well, I was just about as excited, too,” he said. “It was so nice of them to even think about it.”
What began as a thoughtful gesture quickly turned into a full community effort to create an unforgettable experience for the veteran.
According to reports, local sponsors stepped in to help prepare Svejnoha for the special evening, ensuring he received the full prom treatment.
Community Helps Create Magical Night
Before the dance, Svejnoha received a haircut, manicure, and a proper tuxedo fitting to get ready for the long-awaited celebration.
He was then transported to prom in a vintage trolley decorated with balloons and streamers, making the night feel even more special.
When the veteran arrived at the event, students reportedly greeted him with loud cheers and welcomed him onto the dance floor.

The emotional evening served as both a celebration and a tribute to a generation that sacrificed major life moments in service to the country.
Emotional Speech Captures Hearts
At one point during the evening, Svejnoha took the microphone to personally thank everyone who helped make the night possible.
His heartfelt words left many students and attendees emotional.
“I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this, and I love you all,” he said.
For many students, the experience became about far more than a dance. It was an opportunity to honor sacrifice, show gratitude and bridge generations through kindness and community spirit.
