TEXAS – A tragic house fire has destroyed six decades of family history and claimed the lives of two beloved pets, leaving a local family heartbroken but determined to rebuild.
Six Decades of Memories Lost
Lori Franke and her husband, Scott Briggs, returned home Sunday to find their house engulfed in flames. The property had served as a central gathering place for generations of the Franke family for over 60 years.
The extensive damage left the interior entirely covered in soot, and officials have informed the family that nothing inside can be salvaged. Among the irreplaceable losses were cherished family heirlooms, photographs, and paintings belonging to Franke’s late mother, Charlotte von Hartsberg.
A Historic Legacy Destroyed
The loss is particularly painful as the home contained artifacts documenting von Hartsberg’s survival through Nazi Germany—where she was forced into the Hitler Youth as a child—and her subsequent journey to build a life in the United States after World War II.
The only surviving document of this incredible journey is a written family history that was safely preserved inside a fireproof safe.
Tragic Loss of Family Pets
While the destruction of history is devastating, the couple shared that the loss of their two dogs, Max and Baby, is even harder to bear. The couple desperately attempted to rescue the animals during the blaze but were unable to reach them in time.

The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation by local authorities, though the family believes the spark may have originated in the garage.
In the wake of the tragedy, local community members, coworkers, and strangers have rallied together, offering support through personal donations and online fundraisers organized by Franke’s daughters.
