Three Dead After Training Plane Crashes Near Bowie Homes

BOWIE, MD – Three men are dead after a single-engine training flight crashed into a wooded area just feet away from a residential townhouse community late Saturday night in Prince George’s County.

The Fatal Crash

According to the Maryland State Police, a pilot and two passengers were on a training flight from Ocean City, New Jersey, heading to the Montgomery County Air Park in Gaithersburg.

The initial investigation indicates the single-engine aircraft went down around 11:30 p.m. Saturday. Because the crash occurred in a densely wooded area off Scarlett Oak Court, there were no 911 calls or eyewitnesses to the immediate impact.

iPhone Notification Prompts Massive Search

The breakthrough for rescue crews came at 11:53 p.m. when Prince George’s County Public Safety Communications received an automated iPhone crash notification.

The digital alert triggered an intensive air and ground search involving multiple police departments. Search teams tracked the signal through the night, ultimately locating the wreckage at approximately 3:45 a.m. Sunday. All three occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released.

Narrowly Missing a Playground

Local officials emphasized that the tragedy could have been much worse. The plane crashed immediately adjacent to a Bowie townhouse community and a local park playground where neighborhood children play basketball.

Residents reported hearing what sounded like “lightning and thunder” or a “loud seven-second boom” but assumed it was a passing storm. Debris from the aircraft, including a wing, was discovered inside a resident’s backyard. Fortunately, no injuries were reported on the ground.

Federal Investigation Underway

The plane involved belonged to a flight school based in Montgomery County. Both the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have taken over the scene to investigate the mechanical or environmental factors that led to the fatal crash.
