CAMBRIDGESHIRE, England – A 30-year-old man is in custody on suspicion of attempted murder after a 3-year-old boy was found inside a crocodile enclosure at a popular local zoo and farm shop facility.
The Incident at Johnsons of Old Hurst
The shocking incident occurred at Johnsons of Old Hurst, a multi-purpose site located roughly 20 miles northwest of Cambridge that operates a zoo, farm shop, and steakhouse.
Emergency crews responded to the zoo’s Tropical House, where the toddler had entered the crocodile enclosure. According to Cambridgeshire Constabulary, the child was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries and remains in critical but stable condition. Local reports indicate that at least one crocodile attacked the boy before he could be reached.
Heroic Rescue by Zoo Co-Owner
The child’s life was saved due to the quick actions of Tracey Johnson, who runs the facility alongside her husband, Andy. Upon spotting the toddler in immediate danger, Tracey jumped directly into the enclosure to pull the boy to safety.
Miraculously, she did not suffer any serious injuries despite putting herself in grave danger. Wildlife officials, including the National Centre for Reptile Welfare, praised her extraordinary bravery.
Investigation and Security Overview
Cambridgeshire Police confirmed that their major crime unit is leading the investigation. A 30-year-old male suspect has been arrested. Detective Verity McCann stated to the press, “We do not believe the man arrested and the child are known to each other.”
The incident occurred despite extensive safety precautions surrounding the exhibit, which features:
- Heavy-duty metal fencing
- Raised viewing platforms
- Protective steel mesh barriers
The zoo’s Tropical House has been temporarily closed to the public as detectives and safety inspectors continue their investigation into how the child was placed inside the habitat.
