CAPE CORAL, FL – What started as a standard animal rescue mission at Britannia Lake on Monday morning ended with a surprising twist for local first responders and neighbors.
The Canal Rescue
The Cape Coral Fire Department rushed to the scene after receiving emergency calls regarding a “dog in a canal.” Before crews arrived, a concerned local kayaker, Denae Judd, spotted the animal swimming frantically from shore to shore and trailed it to keep eyes on its location.
Another neighbor, Brian, had also tried to jump into the water after initially witnessing the animal fall into the lake. His actions quickly alerted other residents to dial 9-1-1.
The exhausted animal eventually swam under a private dock, giving arriving firefighters the perfect opportunity to safely pull it from the water.
A Surprising Discovery
Once the animal was securely out of the lake, first responders were stunned to realize they hadn’t saved a domestic pet, but rather a wild coyote pup.
Photos released by the department showed the young coyote baring its small fangs, though officials noted the pup was completely exhausted from the ordeal. Because of its condition, the pup could not be immediately released back into the wild and was transported to the East West Veterinary Care Center for medical evaluation and rehabilitation.
Community Effort Recognized
The Cape Coral Fire Department praised the quick-thinking neighborhood response, calling the operation a “great team effort.” Both Denae Judd and Brian were awarded community recognition coins by the department for their vital roles in ensuring the animal’s survival.
