CHELSEA, MA – Chelsea police have arrested a second teenager three months after a violent confrontation left a 25-year-old local man dead.
The Incident and Fatal Attack
The incident occurred on March 19 near the intersection of Chestnut Street and Everett Avenue. The victim, Eduardo Rózales López, was chased by five individuals before being brutally attacked.
Suffolk County prosecutors stated that López was treated at the scene for severe stab wounds to his neck and torso. He was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries.
Family members shared that López had moved to the area from Guatemala seven years ago and leaves behind a 2-year-old child.
The Investigations and Arrests
Chelsea police announced on Thursday that an unnamed 17-year-old juvenile was taken into custody on a murder warrant. He is scheduled for arraignment in Chelsea District Court.
This follows the immediate arrest of 18-year-old Sergio Josué Castellanos, who was apprehended the day after the stabbing and is being held without bail on a murder charge.
Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators allegedly showed Castellanos striking López in a stabbing motion while the victim was on the ground. Authorities later recovered a black machete with stains on the blade near where the suspects were hiding.
Police Statement and Community Impact
The violent daytime attack has deeply shaken the local neighborhood. Neighbors expressed serious concerns over community safety heading into the summer months.
Chelsea Police Chief Keith Houghton released a statement following the second arrest:
“I am very happy with today’s arrest and although an arrest can never replace the loss of a loved one, I hope this can give the family of Mr. Lopez further closure.”
