TAMARAC, FL – A fast-moving wildfire, dubbed the Atlantic Fire, has scorched approximately 180 acres in the Everglades west of Tamarac and remains entirely uncontained, according to the Florida Forest Service.
Fire Burning Near Sawgrass Expressway
The blaze erupted over the weekend on the Everglades side of the Sawgrass Expressway near Commercial Boulevard in western Broward County. As of late Sunday night, the Florida Forest Service reported the wildfire was at 0% containment.
Thick plumes of smoke could be seen rising over the expressway, drawing dozens of local residents to the Sawgrass Trailhead to watch the flames illuminate the night sky.
Community Concerns and Air Quality
Despite the fire’s rapid growth, officials have not announced any immediate road closures or official air quality alerts. However, nearby residents—particularly those with respiratory issues—are closely monitoring the situation.
Local resident Age Casas expressed concern for both the environment and public health, noting, “I suffer from asthma myself and so does my son, so this is one of the things that brought it to my attention to see which way the winds were blowing.”
Investigation and Regional Context
The Atlantic Fire follows several other wildfires that have ignited across South Florida earlier this month as dry conditions persist.
The Florida Forest Service’s Everglades field unit is actively managing the response. Because the fire is burning deep within the marshy terrain of the Everglades, containment remains a significant challenge for ground crews. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.
