DEARBORN, MI – Dearborn police officers acted quickly to rescue a month-old baby after the infant was accidentally locked inside a hot SUV at a local gas station.
Emergency At The Pump
The incident occurred at a Dearborn gas station during a period of intense heat, with outside temperatures hovering around 90 degrees. According to police reports, the mother accidentally became locked outside the vehicle with the keys still inside the SUV.
After repeated attempts to open the doors failed, a gas station clerk, Abe Nahshal, helped call 911. “Obviously, there’s a baby inside, and it’s really hot, so we didn’t want to waste any time,” Nahshal stated.
Minutes From Danger
Initially, responding officers and the mother waited for a tow truck operator to arrive and unlock the vehicle. However, as the heat intensified, officers realized time was running out.
On a 90-degree day, the temperature inside a parked car can spike by 20 degrees in just 5 to 10 minutes, reaching lethal levels for an infant. Dearborn Police Cpl. Dan Bartok explained the urgency:
“The officers made some great decisions that day because with the temperature as hot as it was, it could only take minutes for the temperature inside to become deadly.”
The Rescue
Refusing to wait any longer for rescue crews or a tow truck, an officer used a specialized tool to smash the front passenger window. After carefully clearing the broken glass, the door was opened, and the baby was safely pulled out just in time.
Medical experts warn that infants cannot tolerate extreme heat for long because their bodies heat up much faster than adults, and cars lack air circulation when turned off. Authorities are using this incident to remind motorists to always double-check for their keys and passengers before stepping out of a vehicle.
