Texas Teen Saves Brother From Bahamas Shark Attack

FRIENDSWOOD, TX – A 12-year-old Texas boy is recovering after surviving a horrific shark attack in the Bahamas, thanks to the quick thinking of his older brother who used a swimsuit to save his life.

A Tropical Vacation Turns Nightmare

Parker Roll, 12, of Friendswood, was on a family excursion at a secluded Bahamas beach. The family had spent the day swimming with wildlife when Parker noticed something unusual in the water.

His older brother, Jack Roll, initially assumed it was a harmless nurse shark. Moments later, the water turned into a scene of terror.

“I just hear this ear-piercing scream, and the clearest blue water turned to the murkiest red,” Jack told KPRC 2.

Heroic Rescue 60 Miles Offshore

The family was stranded on a remote island more than 60 miles offshore, completely cut off from cell service or radio contact. Realizing they were entirely on their own, Jack pulled his younger brother from the water.

In a desperate bid to slow the catastrophic bleeding, Jack stripped off his own swimsuit and tied it tightly around Parker’s badly mangled leg as a makeshift tourniquet. It took the group roughly 45 minutes to navigate back to an area with signal to call for emergency medical help.

The Road To Recovery

Parker was rushed to the hospital, where surgeons used nearly 1,000 stitches to repair his leg. While he is currently unable to walk unassisted, doctors expect him to make a full recovery.

Reflecting on the life-or-death situation, Parker acknowledged how close he came to losing his limb—or his life—had his brother not acted instantly to stop the bleeding.

Shark Safety And Tourism

While shark attacks remain exceedingly rare, wildlife experts note that expanding human presence in wild marine habitats through tourism can increase the likelihood of dangerous encounters. Experts advise maintaining a strict, healthy distance from any marine life when entering coastal waters.
