Michigan Father Sentenced To Life For Fatal Shooting Of Son

PORT HURON, MI – A St. Clair County judge has sentenced a Michigan father to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the fatal shooting of his 17-year-old son and the attempted murder of two other children.

The Morning of the Incident

The tragic event took place on the morning of September 11, 2025, inside a Port Huron home. Authorities confirmed that Jeffery James Smerer armed himself with a .380 handgun and shot his son, Kayleb Smerer, in the back of the head as the teen stood waiting to be taken to school.

Smerer then proceeded to shoot his 13-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter. Both younger children survived the attack. Court records reveal Smerer later admitted that he had explicitly planned and intended to shoot his children that morning.

The Legal Background

The shootings occurred on the exact day Smerer was scheduled to appear in court for sentencing in a separate case. He was facing a misdemeanor indecent exposure charge involving a child at a daycare facility operated by his family.

Severe Charges and Final Sentencing

In May, Smerer pleaded guilty to a slate of severe charges, including:

  • Open murder
  • Two counts of assault with intent to commit murder
  • Two counts of first-degree child abuse
  • Five counts of felony firearm use

During the emotional sentencing hearing on Monday, June 29, the court heard powerful testimony from another of Smerer’s children who survived the ordeal unharmed. Following the statements, the judge handed down the maximum sentence of life without parole for the murder charge.

A community fundraiser has been established online to support the surviving siblings and their mother during their recovery.
