A late-night collision in Riverside County has left one bicyclist dead and another hospitalized with serious injuries after a vehicle struck them in the city of Banning.
The crash occurred shortly before 9 p.m. Tuesday along the 5300 block of West Ramsey Street, a busy stretch of roadway that runs through the community. Officers with the Banning Police Department responded to reports of a vehicle-versus-bicycle collision and arrived to find two riders suffering from significant injuries.
At the scene, a 33-year-old woman was discovered with severe trauma. Despite emergency response efforts, she was pronounced dead at the location. Authorities have not yet released her identity, pending notification of next of kin.
A 32-year-old man who was also riding a bicycle sustained major injuries in the crash. He was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officials indicated that he is expected to survive, though the extent of his recovery remains unclear.
The driver involved in the collision stayed at the scene and cooperated fully with investigators. Police confirmed that the motorist was not injured.
According to preliminary findings, investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash. Authorities noted that the two bicyclists are believed to have been members of the local unhoused community. However, officials emphasized that the investigation is still active, and the exact circumstances leading up to the collision have not yet been determined.
