HOLLYWOOD HILLS, CA — Residents of the quiet, winding streets near Laurel Canyon are on edge after a woman in her 70s was assaulted and strangled during a targeted home invasion on Thursday night.
The victim has been identified through property records as Margaux Mirkin, the daughter of the late billionaire founder of Budget Rent a Car. The brutal attack occurred just steps away from Wonderland Avenue Elementary School, an area typically known for its privacy and high-profile residents.
A Violent Confrontation
According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), officers responded to the 8500 block of Lookout Mountain Avenue just before 8:30 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered the elderly resident had been physically assaulted and strangled as suspects ransacked her home.
The victim was rushed to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries. While she has since been released, the emotional toll on the neighborhood is mounting.
Family History of Tragedy
The incident is particularly heartbreaking for the local community, as it marks the second tragedy to strike the Mirkin household in less than two years.
Neighbors told reporters that many of the jewelry pieces stolen during the heist were sentimental gifts from the victim’s late husband. He tragically passed away in a house fire in nearby Laurel Canyon less than 24 months ago. Now, the items he left behind—intended to be family heirlooms—are in the hands of criminals.
The “Perfect Target”
The suspects, described as at least two men wearing hoodies and masks, reportedly made off with an undisclosed amount of cash and high-value jewelry. They were seen fleeing the scene in a white Honda Accord.
A neighbor identified only as Chris described the home’s location as a “perfect target” for opportunistic burglars.
“It’s a dark street. It’s at the top. Dead-end street. Not many people on it,” Chris said. “So, of course, it’s like the perfect street for a break-in.”
The lack of street lighting and the isolation of the dead-end road likely provided the cover the suspects needed to strike under the cover of night.
LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division Takes Charge
Due to the high-profile nature of the victim and the violence involved, the LAPD’s elite Robbery-Homicide Division has taken over the investigation.
This attack comes amid a terrifying two-week streak of residential burglaries across Los Angeles. While many recent break-ins have been concentrated in the San Fernando Valley—prompting Mayor Karen Bass to increase patrols in those neighborhoods—this Hollywood Hills incident proves that the high-end hillside communities remain vulnerable.
Authorities are asking anyone with surveillance footage from Lookout Mountain Avenue or Wonderland Avenue to come forward.
Is Los Angeles doing enough to protect its residents from this surge in home invasions? With the Robbery-Homicide Division now involved, many are asking if more patrols are needed in the Hills as well as the Valley.
