CHICAGO, IL — The Chicago community is in mourning after a routine hospital transport turned into a deadly ambush on Saturday morning.
Alphanso Talley, 27, has been charged with the murder of 38-year-old Chicago Police Officer John Bartholomew and the wounding of a second officer at Swedish Hospital. The incident has reignited a fierce debate over Illinois’ judicial policies, as it was revealed the suspect was free on pretrial release for a separate armed robbery at the time of the shooting.
The Ambush During a CT Scan
The violence erupted around 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Swedish Hospital, where Talley was in custody following a previous arrest. According to prosecutors, Talley was being escorted for a CT scan when the unthinkable happened.
While lying in a hospital bed, Talley allegedly concealed a 10mm handgun beneath a blanket. As officers prepared for the medical procedure, Talley reportedly pulled the weapon and opened fire, striking both Officer Bartholomew and his partner.
Following the shooting, Talley fled the building in his hospital gown. After an intense search, police located him hiding under a nearby porch, still in possession of the 10mm handgun. Shell casings found at the hospital have since been matched to the weapon in Talley’s possession, prosecutors stated.
A Violent Criminal History
Monday’s court hearing revealed a lengthy criminal record that has prompted many to ask why the suspect was on the streets. Talley’s history includes:
- 2017: Four aggravated robbery convictions.
- 2021: A prior gun-related conviction.
- March 11, 2026: An active warrant for his arrest was issued while he was on pretrial release for another armed robbery case.
Talley now faces a mountain of charges, including murder, attempted murder, escape, and possession of a firearm by a repeat offender. He has been ordered detained and was remanded to the Cook County Department of Corrections.
“It Needs to Stop”: FOP President Slams SAFE-T Act
The tragedy has prompted a blistering response from John Catanzara, president of the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police. During a news conference, Catanzara pointed the finger directly at Illinois politicians and the controversial SAFE-T Act, which overhauled the state’s bail and pretrial release systems.
“They literally go hide in a corner and continue on with their nonsense of trying to let criminals out on the street,” Catanzara told reporters. “It needs to f—— stop. It just does.”
Catanzara called on the media and the public to hold judges and legislators in Springfield accountable for the policies that allowed a violent offender to be out on the streets despite an active arrest warrant.
Honoring a Fallen Hero
Officer John Bartholomew is being remembered by his colleagues as a dedicated public servant. The second officer involved in the shooting is currently recovering from injuries, though their specific condition has not been updated since Monday morning.
