QUEENS, NY — A routine response to a domestic disturbance turned into a scene of absolute devastation early Thursday morning when a house in Queens exploded, sending New York City police officers flying through the air and leveling a residential building.
Authorities are calling it a miracle that no one was killed after a massive fireball erupted just as officers were attempting to enter the home. The explosion, which occurred before 3 a.m., was caught on dramatic police body camera footage that has since gone viral across the city.
Watch: The Moment the Blast Erupts
The newly released body camera video shows a group of officers approaching a small home in Queens. As one officer reaches for the door, the house literally breathes fire. A violent blast blows out every window, knocking officers backward across the yard and into a metal gate.
Through the smoke and falling debris, the footage captures the raw moments of the aftermath. Officers can be seen scrambling to their feet, immediately checking on their partners. “You guys good?” one officer shouts, his voice thick with adrenaline. Within a minute, the same officers are seen rushing back toward the billowing smoke to pull two young children and several staggering adults to safety.
“We got very lucky today,” said NYPD Assistant Chief Christopher McIntosh during a press briefing. “This could have turned out really differently. Thankfully, today, luck was on their side.”
The Manhunt for the Suspect
The chaos began when an intoxicated man arrived at the home armed with a knife. According to investigators, the man was carrying two garbage bags filled with canisters containing an “unknown substance.”
Police say the man forced his way into a basement apartment—where his wife, daughter, and two grandchildren live—by pushing in an air conditioning unit. While the family was able to flee the building before the blast, the suspect’s whereabouts remain a mystery. As of Thursday afternoon, the man is unaccounted for, and a massive search is underway.
The Aftermath: A Neighborhood in Shock
The force of the explosion was so great that the primary residence completely collapsed into a pile of charred wood and brick. The blast was felt blocks away, and several neighboring homes sustained significant structural damage.
Current Casualty Report:
- 8 NYPD Officers: Treated for minor injuries, including burns and head lacerations.
- Residents: All accounted for; several were hospitalized for observation but are expected to recover.
- The Suspect: Still at large; considered dangerous.
The Fire Marshal is currently investigating the “unknown substance” in the canisters to determine if the explosion was a deliberate act of arson or a gas leak triggered by the suspect’s actions.
Community Update: Have You Seen Him?
The NYPD is asking anyone in the Queens area with information on the suspect’s location to come forward. Residents are also urged to check their own home security cameras for any footage of a man carrying garbage bags in the area before 3 a.m.
