6-Year-Old Hospitalized After Accidental Shooting In West Perrine

WEST PERRINE, FL – A young boy was rushed to the hospital Tuesday afternoon after accidentally shooting himself with a firearm inside a southwest Miami-Dade home.

The Incident

The shooting occurred shortly before 4 p.m. in the 10100 block of West Circle Plaza. According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened after a 6-year-old child managed to get hold of his mother’s gun.

The mother told authorities she was inside the home when she heard a single gunshot. Upon investigating, she discovered her son had been shot in the shoulder.

Medical Response

The mother immediately drove the child to a local hospital for emergency treatment. Footage from the scene later showed the child being airlifted to another medical facility for specialized care. Fortunately, officials have confirmed that the boy is currently in stable condition.

Investigation and Florida Law

Deputies cordoned off the West Circle Plaza residence with yellow crime scene tape as part of their ongoing investigation.

Under Florida state law, gun owners are legally required to secure their firearms in a manner that keeps them out of the reach of children. Authorities have noted that failure to properly store a weapon can result in a second-degree misdemeanor charge. At this time, officials have not announced if any charges will be filed against the mother.
