Driver of Stolen Car Killed After Fleeing San Jose Police, Crashing in West San Jose

A driver who fled from police in a stolen vehicle was killed early Saturday morning after losing control and crashing in West San Jose, according to authorities.

The incident began around 3 a.m. when officers with the San Jose Police Department attempted to stop a stolen 2013 Infiniti EX37 traveling north on Winchester Boulevard near Moorpark Avenue. Police said that as officers initiated the enforcement stop, the driver suddenly turned eastbound onto Moorpark Avenue and sped away at a high rate of speed.

Officers did not pursue the vehicle, police said.

Moments later, the Infiniti continued east on Moorpark Avenue and lost control shortly after passing Monroe Street. The vehicle slammed into a cement wall near the Highway 17 overpass, authorities said. Officers witnessed the crash from a distance and immediately responded to the scene.

When police arrived, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and no additional injuries were reported.

The driver has not yet been identified. The Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner will release the driver’s identity after next of kin have been notified, police said.

Officials confirmed that this was San Jose’s third fatal traffic collision of 2026, highlighting ongoing concerns about reckless driving and high-speed incidents during overnight hours.

The circumstances surrounding the theft of the vehicle and the events leading up to the attempted traffic stop remain under investigation.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has additional information to contact Detective Leslie of the San Jose Police Department’s Traffic Investigations Unit at 408-277-4654 or by email at [email protected].

Authorities emphasized that community cooperation is critical as investigators continue working to fully understand what led to the deadly crash.
