Tampa, Florida — What began as a routine examination for a stray dog suffering from a painful limp quickly turned into a shocking medical emergency after veterinarians discovered a gold necklace lodged inside the animal’s stomach.
The unexpected case involved a 5-year-old Chihuahua mix named Edward, who was brought to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay after a good Samaritan noticed he was struggling to walk.
X-Rays Reveal Dangerous Surprise Inside Dog’s Body
Veterinarians initially believed Edward simply needed treatment for a leg fracture. However, while taking X-rays ahead of surgery, the medical team noticed something alarming hidden inside the dog’s digestive system.
According to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, doctors discovered foreign objects inside both Edward’s stomach and colon.
“While taking X-rays for the fracture, our veterinarian discovered foreign bodies in both his stomach and colon,” Nash McCutchen with the Humane Society of Tampa Bay said.
The organization explained that one object appeared likely to pass naturally, but another posed a much more serious threat to the dog’s life.
“The object in his colon was expected to pass safely on its own, but the one in his stomach posed a life-threatening risk if it moved into his intestines.”
Concerned about the danger, veterinarians ordered additional full-body X-rays to get a better understanding of the situation.
Emergency Surgery Saves Edward’s Life
The additional scans revealed an even larger foreign object trapped inside Edward’s stomach. The dog was immediately rushed into emergency abdominal surgery.
During the operation, veterinarians made a shocking discovery — Edward had swallowed an 18-karat gold necklace.
Images later shared by the Humane Society showed the tangled necklace visible in the X-ray scans, as well as the jewelry after it had been safely removed from the dog’s stomach.
“Our vet team had to perform emergency surgery to save his life,” McCutchen added.
The surgery successfully removed the dangerous object before it could cause severe internal damage or become fatal.
Dog Facing Multiple Health Challenges
Edward’s medical issues extended far beyond the swallowed necklace and fractured leg.
According to the shelter, the stray dog also required multiple dental extractions, needed to be neutered, and was suffering from anemia when he arrived for treatment.
Veterinarians are continuing to monitor his condition closely as he recovers from the abdominal surgery.
The shelter also revealed that Edward’s injured leg may eventually need to be amputated. However, doctors decided to delay the procedure because his body was too weak to safely endure multiple major surgeries at once.
Future Surgery Still Possible
Shelter officials said Edward first needs time to regain strength and improve his blood levels before another operation can be considered.
“He would not have survived both abdominal surgery and a leg amputation at the same time,” McCutchen explained.
Despite the difficult recovery process ahead, the shelter says Edward is currently stable and comfortable.
“We are currently waiting for his blood levels to regenerate before moving forward with the amputation surgery. Despite the fracture, Edward is comfortable, pain-free, and able to move around.”
The unusual case quickly gained attention online, with many social media users stunned by the bizarre discovery inside the dog’s stomach.
The Humane Society ended its post with a lighthearted reminder for pet owners everywhere:
“This is your reminder that dogs will, in fact, eat literally anything.”
