Good Samaritan Missing After Rescuing Swimmer At Lake Mead

BOULDER CITY, NV – A search is underway for a man who disappeared beneath the surface of Lake Mead on Saturday morning after jumping into the water to rescue a struggling woman.

The Rescue Turn Tragic

The incident occurred on Saturday morning, June 6, near the Hoover Dam area. According to the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW), the missing man was part of a group of 12 people on a rented pontoon boat when three adult women entered the water.

When one of the women began to struggle, the man jumped in with a throwable flotation device. The woman successfully used the device to return safely to the boat.

Separated By Strong Winds

As passengers focused on getting everyone back on board, powerful wind gusts quickly pushed the pontoon boat away, separating the man from the vessel.

Witnesses stated the man initially appeared calm and was floating on his back in water estimated to be between 125 and 175 feet deep. However, he was soon seen submerging and resurfacing once before completely disappearing beneath the surface.

Difficult Search Operations Underway

The National Park Service is currently leading the recovery efforts, assisted by NDOW game wardens. Search teams have faced severe challenges due to deep reservoir waters and unpredictable wind conditions that have complicated operations over the last three days.

“This incident is a tragic reminder of how quickly conditions can change on the water,” said NDOW Game Warden Lt. Chris Walther, emphasizing that factors like strong winds and fatigue can turn an enjoyable day into an emergency instantly.

Officials urge all boaters to check weather forecasts before launching and remind the public that life jackets are essential for safety on the lake.
