10-Year CPD Veteran Identified in Fatal Hospital Shooting; Neighborhood Swarmed During Manhunt

CHICAGO, IL — The Chicago Police Department is in mourning following a violent weekend incident that claimed the life of a dedicated public servant and left another veteran officer fighting for his life.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has officially identified the fallen officer as 38-year-old John Bartholomew. A 10-year veteran of the force, Bartholomew was fatally shot on Saturday morning at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital in the city’s Ravenswood neighborhood.

Chaos at the Hospital

The incident unfolded just before 11:00 AM Saturday on the city’s North Side. According to Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling, two officers were in the process of transporting an individual to the hospital when the suspect opened fire.

While Officer Bartholomew tragically lost his life, a second officer—a 57-year-old veteran with 21 years on the force—was also struck by gunfire. As of Saturday evening, that officer remains hospitalized in critical condition. The CPD community is currently holding a vigil for the veteran’s recovery.

The Ravenswood Manhunt: ‘I’ve Never Seen Anything Like This’

Immediately following the shooting, the typically quiet and scenic streets of Ravenswood were transformed into a massive crime scene. Dozens of police vehicles swarmed the area, some racing the wrong way down one-way streets to establish a perimeter around the hospital and nearby residential blocks.

Madison Heckle, a local resident, watched the chaos unfold from her window on Winona Street. “This is a one-way street; we saw more than one cop going very fast down the wrong way,” she told reporters.

The manhunt focused on the area between California and Lincoln Avenues, as police tracked the suspect through backyards and residential alleys.

Captured on Camera

Technology played a crucial role in the apprehension of the suspect. Local resident Alexis shared that her neighbors alerted her to the danger, leading her to check her security footage.

A Ring camera in the neighborhood captured a chilling sight: the suspect was seen crouching in a neighbor’s gangway, attempting to hide from the scores of officers patrolling the block.

“It was creepy, it was weird,” Alexis stated. “I just didn’t know what to think.” Shortly after the footage was recorded, police were able to close in and take the suspect into custody without further incident.

A Community in Shock

The shooting at a major healthcare facility has left many Chicagoans questioning the safety of public institutions. Superintendent Snelling noted that Bartholomew was a respected member of the department, but few other details have been released as the investigation continues into how the suspect obtained a weapon during the transport.

“I’ve lived in Chicago for a decade, and I’ve never seen anything like this,” said Heckle, reflecting the sentiment of a neighborhood struggling to process the violence on their doorstep.

A Hero Remembered

Officer John Bartholomew is remembered by his colleagues as a “policeman’s policeman.” His ten years of service were marked by a commitment to the North Side communities he served. Funeral arrangements and memorial details are expected to be announced in the coming days.
