BOSTON, Massachusetts — What was supposed to be an Independence Day celebration turned into one of the most violent nights Boston has seen in years.
Between midnight and 4 a.m. on July 4th, Boston police responded to five separate shootings that left 13 people shot — two of them dead.
Two Deadly Shootings in Roxbury
Just after 12:30 a.m., officers rushed to Blue Hill Avenue in Roxbury after a shooting left four people hit. One victim did not survive. The other three are expected to recover.
Less than three hours later, police were called back to Roxbury — this time to George Street. Three more people were shot. One was pronounced dead at the scene. A second remains in critical condition.
By the time the sun came up, Boston had lost two lives in a single night.
Officers Attacked With Fireworks
The shootings were not the only danger officers faced.
During a street takeover party in Mattapan, officers were deliberately struck with fireworks while responding to the scene. Three were taken to the hospital and later released.
The Boston Police Patrolmen’s Association released body camera footage of the attack, calling it “beyond outrageous.”
Union president Larry Calderone said a 14-year veteran told him it was the most horrific night of his entire career.
“Think Twice Before You Throw Late-Night Parties”
Police Commissioner Michael Cox did not hold back.
“Large amounts of people gathering, fireworks, firearms, and alcohol is a bad combination,” Cox said. “We’re asking you — think twice before you want to throw late-night parties.”
Mayor Michelle Wu added: “When we see large gatherings with firearms present, that is never a recipe for peaceful celebrations.”
Two families are now grieving. A city is asking — how did a holiday come to this?
