Muscatine, Iowa — A tragic and devastating investigation is underway in Iowa after authorities say a man allegedly killed six people, all believed to be family members, before taking his own life during a confrontation with police.
The violence unfolded across multiple locations in Muscatine on Monday, leaving a community in shock and law enforcement agencies working to piece together what happened.
Police Respond to Domestic Dispute Call
According to Muscatine Police Chief Anthony Kies, officers were dispatched to a residence on Park Avenue at approximately 12:12 p.m. on June 1 following reports of a domestic disturbance.
When officers arrived, they discovered four people who had been fatally shot inside the home.
As investigators began processing the scene, they uncovered evidence suggesting the violence extended beyond the residence.
Authorities later located additional victims at separate locations throughout the city.
Additional Victims Found at Other Locations
Police said an adult man was found dead inside a home on Mill Street, while another man was discovered deceased inside a business on Grandview Avenue.
The discoveries brought the total number of victims to six.
Investigators have not publicly released the names of the victims as officials continue notifying family members and gathering evidence.
However, police stated they believe all six victims were related to the suspect.
The killings have been described as one of the most significant and heartbreaking incidents the community has experienced in recent years.
Suspect Identified and Later Found Dead
Authorities identified Ryan Willis McFarland as the suspected gunman.
Police say McFarland fled after the shootings, prompting an urgent search throughout the area.
Law enforcement eventually located him near the riverfront trail close to the pedestrian bridge.
According to Chief Kies, McFarland shot himself while officers were attempting to confront him.
Emergency medical personnel attempted life-saving measures at the scene, but he was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
The suspect’s death brought the immediate threat to an end but left investigators with many unanswered questions regarding motive and circumstances.
Police Chief Speaks About Community Tragedy
During a press briefing, Chief Kies expressed the emotional impact the case has had on both investigators and the wider community.
“Today, I simply do not have the words,” Kies said. “This act of evil and what it has done to our community.”
