PITTSBURGH, PA – Weather officials are urging Pittsburgh area residents to prepare for an extended period of extreme heat as temperatures are forecast to hover near or at 90 degrees for several consecutive days.
Peak Heat Forecasted Wednesday and Thursday
The ongoing temperature surge is expected to hit its peak during the middle of the week. Daytime highs on Wednesday and Thursday will be the most intense, with actual temperatures reaching 93 to 94 degrees across most local neighborhoods, including the city of Pittsburgh.
Due to rising humidity levels, the heat index—what it actually feels like outside—is projected to climb into the upper 90s, approaching nearly 100 degrees.
First Alert Weather Days Activated
In response to the prolonged risk of dangerous heat, local meteorologists have issued multiple First Alert Weather Days. The alert indicates that the combination of high temperatures and humidity could pose a health risk to vulnerable populations, including senior citizens, young children, and outdoor workers.
Heat Safety Recommendations
Local authorities advise residents to take standard precautions over the next several days:
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty.
- Limit Outdoor Activity: Avoid strenuous outdoor tasks during peak sunlight hours (10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.).
- Check on Neighbors: Ensure elderly neighbors or those without reliable air conditioning have a cool place to stay.
The heat wave is expected to last through late Thursday evening before slightly cooler air offers relief heading into the weekend.
