Teenager Saves Sherman Oaks Home From Middle-Of-Night Brush Fire

SHERMAN OAKS, CA – A quick-thinking 13-year-old boy is being hailed as a hero after waking up to a fast-moving brush fire and saving his family’s Sherman Oaks home early Saturday morning.

The Midnight Awakening

The fire broke out around 3:00 a.m. in the 14000 block of Hesby Street. Inside one of the endangered homes, 13-year-old Myron Tkachenko woke up to an unusual crackling sound outside his window. Looking out, he discovered flames tearing through the dry brush right in front of his house.

Myron immediately sprang into action:

  • Woke up his sleeping parents.
  • Called 911 to alert emergency crews.
  • Evaporated panic by getting everyone safely out of the house.
  • Moved the family vehicles out of the driveway to clear a path for firefighters.

Battling The Flames With Garden Hoses

Before the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived on the scene, the family worked desperately to keep the flames from jumping to the main structure. They utilized a garden hose and filled large kitchen pans with water, repeatedly dumping them onto the burning bushes.

Firefighters arrived quickly and completely extinguished the blaze before it could breach either of the adjacent homes. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Suspect Caught On Camera

The cause of the fire is officially under investigation, but security cameras in the neighborhood captured a troubling sequence of events. A man, believed by local residents to be a transient, was seen walking into a front yard just moments before the brush ignited. The footage shows the individual leaving the area as the flames began to spread.

Growing Neighborhood Concerns

The incident has reignited deep frustrations among Sherman Oaks residents regarding homelessness and safety in the area. Neighbors noted that vehicle break-ins, illegal street camping, and unmanaged RVs have been ongoing issues on Hesby Street.

Local police are reviewing the surveillance footage to identify the suspect. No arrests have been made at this time.
