SIMI VALLEY, CA – One person was killed and five others were injured Monday afternoon after a white Tesla crashed into the outdoor patio of an Urbane Cafe in a busy Simi Valley shopping plaza.
Tragedy at Patio Dining Area
The collision occurred around 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of Tierra Rejada and Madera roads, according to the Simi Valley Police Department. Emergency responders arrived to find the vehicle lodged deep within the restaurant’s outdoor dining section.
The Ventura County Fire Department confirmed that one individual was pronounced dead at the scene. Five other victims sustained minor injuries and received medical attention. Authorities have withheld the identity of the deceased pending family notification.
Investigation and Tech Scrutiny
The cause of the crash remains under active investigation by local police. Officials have not yet stated whether any automated driving features or driver-assistance technologies were active at the time of the impact.
This incident follows a separate fatal Tesla crash earlier this month in Katy, Texas, which prompted a federal investigation and an ongoing lawsuit regarding driver-assistance technology. In that case, Tesla stated the driver had manually overridden the system.
Traffic and Scene Status
A heavy police and fire presence remained at the shopping center for several hours on Monday to document the scene and safely remove the vehicle from the structural damage. Patrons and drivers are advised to expect minor traffic delays near the plaza as cleanup concludes.
