SEFFNER, FL — The Seffner community and Armwood High School are reeling from a devastating loss following a violent multi-car collision on Saturday night that claimed the life of 17-year-old Elijah Battiste. As students and faculty return to campus with heavy hearts, authorities are still searching for a key individual involved in the fatal wreck.
The Fatal Collision on State Road 574
The tragedy unfolded late Saturday night in Hillsborough County. According to reports from the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the chain of events began on State Road 574.
Investigators state that a 40-year-old man from Mulberry was driving a Nissan Versa eastbound, while Elijah Battiste was traveling westbound in a Volkswagen Passat. Near the intersection of Chastain Road, the two vehicles collided in a nearly head-on impact.
The force of the collision left both vehicles disabled in the middle of the roadway. However, the tragedy didn’t end there. Moments after the initial impact, a third vehicle—a Ford F-150—struck Battiste’s Volkswagen.
Manhunt Underway for Third Driver
In a shocking turn of events, troopers say the driver of the Ford F-150 did not stop to render aid. Instead, the individual fled the scene on foot and remains at large.
Both drivers from the first collision were rushed to a local hospital with serious injuries. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, Elijah Battiste later passed away from his injuries. The FHP is currently pleading with the public for any information regarding the identity or whereabouts of the Ford driver.
“Tomorrow Isn’t Promised”: A School in Grief
At Armwood High School, the atmosphere is somber. Elijah was not just another student; he was a standout athlete and a beloved peer. A talented club soccer player and a star outfielder for the Armwood baseball team, his presence was felt throughout the halls.
Principal Dina Langston shared the deep emotional toll the loss has taken on the student body, especially following the recent senior panoramic photo.
“They’re like, ‘Langston, you just talked to us about how accidents happen… love every day, because tomorrow isn’t promised, but this was real,'” Langston said. “Some kids who sat next to him just couldn’t even walk in the room today. It’s just so heartbreaking.”
Langston, who oversees more than 2,000 students, noted that she had a personal connection with Elijah, describing him as an “amazing young man” known for his infectious smile and great hugs.
Honoring a Legacy
The school is currently providing support for teachers and students who are struggling to process the void left by Elijah’s absence. Plans are already in motion to ensure his memory is honored during the upcoming graduation ceremony.
“I know what period I would see Elijah in the hall,” one student reportedly told the Principal. “It wasn’t that he was absent, it’s that I’m not going to see him anymore.”
