WESLEY CHAPEL, FL – Two women miraculously escaped with only minor injuries after an oversized trailer broke loose and completely crushed their SUV on Interstate 75 Saturday morning.
The Collision Near Wesley Chapel
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the incident occurred around 9:52 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-75. A tractor-trailer, driven by a 36-year-old Kansas man, was hauling two oversized trailers loaded with empty evaporator tanks.
Investigators stated that a helper vehicle traveling with the convoy unlocked the rear trailer to assist with a lane change. Instead of executing the turn safely, the detached trailer swung wildly into the center lane, slamming into a Subaru Forester.
An Astonishing Survival
The heavy trailer rode directly over the roof of the Subaru, crushing the vehicle nearly flat beneath its massive weight. Both vehicles came to a stop across the highway, completely blocking all northbound traffic.
Despite the severe damage to the SUV, the 23-year-old driver and her 22-year-old passenger, both from Georgia, were able to climb out of the wreckage. Emergency crews transported them to a local hospital with only minor injuries, a result that responders are calling an absolute miracle.
Traffic Chaos and Ongoing Investigation
The catastrophic crash shut down all northbound lanes of Interstate 75 for nearly two hours while heavy-duty wreckers cleared the mangled vehicles and debris.
FHP investigators are continuing to review the incident to determine exactly how the trailer became detached during the maneuver. Authorities have not yet announced if the driver of the helper vehicle or the truck driver will face criminal charges or traffic citations.
