San Clemente Couple Witness Fatal Crocodile Attack In Mexico

SAN CLEMENTE, CA – An Orange County couple vacationing in Puerto Vallarta witnessed a horrifying crocodile attack that claimed the life of a 28-year-old tourist, raising urgent safety concerns about the popular resort beach.

Chaos on the Beach

The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Friday, June 26, at Marina Vallarta Beach, just steps away from the Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort and Spa.

Jamie Yetter and her fiancé, Chris Bury, residents of San Clemente, were at the resort’s pool when they heard desperate screams from the waterline. Thinking someone was drowning in a rip current, Bury grabbed a kayak and rushed toward the ocean, only to realize a crocodile was attacking a man.

Bury attempted to throw a life preserver to the victim, but the man appeared to be in shock and could not grab it before the crocodile pulled him underwater.

Tragic Recovery and Capture

Following an overnight search and rescue operation by Jalisco state police and local authorities, the victim’s remains were recovered on Saturday, nearly 1,000 feet offshore. He was identified as Irving Mauricio, a 28-year-old lawyer from Mexico City.

The crocodile involved in the attack was located and captured on Saturday near Boca de Tomates. Officials have not confirmed whether the animal will be relocated or euthanized.

Lack of Warning Signs Sparks Concern

The incident has raised questions about tourist safety at the resort area. Bury noted that there were no warning signs posted on the beach regarding crocodile hazards, and the beach remained open to the public the following day.

While Mexican officials have urged tourists to avoid swimming near river mouths and estuaries where crocodiles typically live, local reports indicate Marina Vallarta Beach is not located near either.
