QUEENS, NY – A horrific Monday night crash on the Long Island Expressway (LIE) left two people dead and ten others injured after a bus flipped into oncoming traffic.
The Collision
According to the FDNY, the incident occurred just before 11:45 p.m. Monday near Exit 16 (Greenpoint Avenue). A bus traveling westbound lost control, flipped over the barrier, and crashed into eastbound traffic lanes.
A massive emergency response followed, with 79 fire and EMS personnel rushing to the scene. First responders confirmed it was a motor vehicle accident with a “confirmed pin,” requiring crews to cut victims out of the wreckage.
Casualties Reported
Authorities confirmed the following casualties at the scene:
- 2 Fatalities: Pronounced dead at the scene.
- 3 Critical Injuries: Rushed to local hospitals in life-threatening condition.
- 7 Minor Injuries: Treated for non-life-threatening wounds.
The identities of the victims have not yet been released pending family notification.
Major Traffic Shutdown
The NYPD has shut down all eastbound and westbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway at 50th Street. The closure is expected to cause severe traffic delays through the morning commute as crash investigators and emergency crews work to clear the massive debris field.
Drivers are strictly advised to avoid the area and utilize the Grand Central Parkway or local routes instead.
