LOS ANGELES, CA – A Los Angeles family has filed a lawsuit against the city after an LAPD officer shot and killed their 2-year-old dog during a sports celebration.
The lawsuit alleges negligence, excessive force, and a lack of proper training, claiming the officer killed the dog, named Jameson, “in cold blood.”
The Fatal Encounter
The incident occurred on June 13 when Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to a 911 call reporting a “screaming woman” at the residence. Family members clarified that the noise was actually Marie Marseille celebrating the New York Knicks’ recent championship win.
According to released body camera footage, Jameson—a St. Bernard, Golden Retriever, and Doodle mix wearing a Knicks T-shirt—slipped out of the front door as Marseille opened it to speak with officers. The dog barked and moved toward an officer who already had his weapon drawn. The officer fired multiple shots, killing the pet.
Family Demands Accountability
Jeremiah Garcia, Marseille’s son, was on a FaceTime call with his mother when the shooting took place.
“As soon as my mom opened the door to greet the officer, Jamo sprints out as an opportunity just to greet someone else,” Garcia said. “When I was on the phone, I heard two shots.”
The LAPD has stated it does not comment on pending litigation.
City Leadership Responds
LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell called the shooting “an incredibly tragic incident,” acknowledging the deep personal loss for the family.
LA Mayor Karen Bass also expressed serious concern and has called for an immediate review of the department’s use of force policy regarding animals. Mayor Bass emphasized the need to update tactics, policies, and training to ensure better safety for officers, residents, and pets alike.
