BUTLER TOWNSHIP — Police in Butler Township arrested a woman Thursday morning in connection with a vehicle theft that originated out of state.
According to the Butler Township Police Department, officers were alerted to a suspected stolen vehicle on Jan. 8 after it was detected by a license plate reader camera in the area. Police were able to locate the vehicle shortly afterward and initiated a traffic stop without incident.
During the stop, investigators said the driver initially provided false identification information to officers. She was later positively identified as Melissa McDaniel, who police confirmed had an active warrant for aggravated drug possession.
Authorities said McDaniel later admitted to stealing the vehicle, which had been reported stolen from New Hampshire. The vehicle was recovered at the scene.
McDaniel was taken into custody and charged with receiving stolen property and obstructing official business. Police indicated additional charges could be possible pending further review of the case and coordination with authorities from the jurisdiction where the vehicle was originally reported stolen.
The investigation remains ongoing, and police have not released further details about how long the vehicle had been missing or whether other individuals may be connected to the theft. Anyone with additional information related to the case is encouraged to contact local law enforcement.
