22-Year-Old Man Killed After Vehicle Crashes Into South Platte River Near Commerce City

A 22-year-old man died Sunday evening after his vehicle left the roadway and plunged into the South Platte River near Commerce City, according to authorities.

The Colorado State Patrol said the crash occurred around 5:30 p.m. near the intersection of East 58th Avenue and York Street. Investigators reported that the driver was traveling eastbound when the vehicle suddenly crossed into oncoming lanes of traffic before veering off the left side of the road.

Troopers said the car went airborne after leaving the roadway, launching off a steep embankment before landing upside down in the South Platte River. The impact caused the vehicle to become partially submerged in the water.

Witnesses in the area rushed to the scene and attempted to help before emergency crews arrived. Authorities said several bystanders worked together to pull the driver from the overturned vehicle as first responders were dispatched to the location. Their efforts continued until paramedics took over life-saving measures.

The driver was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment but was later pronounced dead due to injuries sustained in the crash. Officials confirmed that the man was the only occupant of the vehicle at the time of the incident.

The victim’s identity has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.

Colorado State Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. At this time, officials have not said whether speed, impairment, or other contributing factors played a role. No other vehicles were reported to be directly involved in the incident.
