Montgomery, Alabama – A man has been convicted of attempted murder following a shooting inside a neighborhood convenience store that prosecutors say put multiple lives at risk.
Maricas Taylor was found guilty of attempted murder and illegally possessing a firearm in connection with the 2022 shooting at the Petro Mart on Fairview Avenue. The case was prosecuted by the office of Azzie Oliver, the District Attorney for Montgomery County.
Shooting Followed Store Argument
According to evidence presented during the trial, Taylor initially entered the convenience store and became involved in an argument with the cashier. He left the location but returned approximately 30 minutes later, this time wearing a mask in what prosecutors described as an attempt to conceal his identity.
Surveillance footage shown to jurors revealed that Taylor pulled out a semi-automatic pistol equipped with an extended magazine. He approached the cashier and fired multiple shots in her direction. Despite the gunfire, the cashier was not struck.
After discharging the weapon, Taylor fled the store, entered his vehicle, and drove away from the scene.
Investigation and Arrest
Law enforcement officials were able to identify and locate Taylor following the shooting. Investigators also found the vehicle he used to leave the scene. Inside the car, authorities reportedly uncovered several pieces of evidence linking him directly to the crime.
Prosecutors further stated that Taylor was legally prohibited from possessing a firearm due to his prior criminal history. Under Alabama law, individuals with certain violent felony convictions are barred from owning or carrying firearms.
The conviction means Taylor now faces the possibility of life in prison without the chance of parole.
Prosecutor Condemns Actions
In a statement following the verdict, District Attorney Oliver described Taylor as a repeat violent offender who chose to escalate a dispute into a life-threatening situation.
She emphasized that firing a weapon inside a neighborhood convenience store endangered not only the intended victim but also employees and customers who expect to feel safe in such everyday settings. According to Oliver, the defendant’s actions demonstrated a deliberate disregard for human life and public safety.
The prosecution argued that the surveillance footage, physical evidence recovered from the vehicle, and Taylor’s criminal background collectively supported the jury’s decision.
Sentencing Scheduled
Taylor is scheduled to be sentenced on February 26. Given his criminal history and the seriousness of the charges, he faces a potential life sentence without parole.
