North Dakota–Minnesota Weather Alert: Heavy Snow and 35 mph Winds Set to Hit Grand Forks by Friday Night

North Dakota – A developing winter system is set to intensify across the northern Plains, bringing a sharp shift in weather conditions for residents in and around Grand Forks. What begins as light snowfall is expected to quickly escalate into a more disruptive event by Friday evening.

A Winter Storm Watch has been issued starting Friday afternoon through late Saturday night, with snowfall totals projected between 3 to 8 inches. Strong wind gusts reaching up to 35 mph will significantly worsen conditions, leading to blowing snow and reduced visibility across open areas.

Communities across eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota—including East Grand Forks, Crookston, and Thief River Falls—are expected to see rapidly deteriorating weather as snowfall intensifies. Major routes such as I-29 and Highway 2 could become hazardous, particularly during peak snowfall Friday night.

Wind will be a major factor in this system. Gusts near 35 mph may create drifting snow and sudden whiteout conditions, making travel risky. Drivers are advised to stay alert, reduce speed, and consider postponing non-essential travel during the worst conditions.

Temperatures will start in the mid-30s, allowing for a brief mix of precipitation early on. However, colder air moving in will ensure most of the system transitions fully to snow. Any melted snow during the day may refreeze overnight, increasing the risk of icy roads and accidents.

Conditions are expected to improve by Sunday, with clearer skies and temperatures rising into the 40s. The early April weekend will end on a calmer note, followed by a gradual warming trend into the upcoming week.

Five-Day Weather Snapshot for Grand Forks:

Friday: High near 37°F, snow developing
Saturday: High near 36°F, heavy snow with breezy conditions
Sunday: Partly sunny, high around 41°F
Monday: Mostly sunny, high near 30°F
Tuesday: Partly sunny, high around 37°F
