Beech Grove, Texas — A Texas teenager is being called incredibly lucky after surviving a terrifying lightning strike while fishing with friends near the Angelina River, only to return to the exact same spot the very next day.
The shocking incident happened on Saturday, May 9, near the Bevilport boat ramp in Beech Grove, Texas, where emergency crews rushed to help the teen after receiving reports of a lightning strike victim.
Lightning Strike Sends Teen Flying
According to the Beech Grove Volunteer Fire Department, first responders were dispatched to the scene around 5:25 p.m. after receiving a call about a teenager struck by lightning while outdoors.
Authorities said the 19-year-old, later identified as Wyche, had been fishing along the riverbank with friends when severe weather moved through the area.
“The friends reported lightning struck a nearby pine tree that the patient was standing under, traveling into him and throwing him several feet away,” the fire department said. “Pieces of the pine tree were scattered throughout the area.”
The violent strike reportedly caused debris from the shattered tree to scatter across the scene, adding to the danger and chaos of the moment.
Teen Describes Horrifying Experience
When emergency crews arrived, they found Wyche conscious and able to communicate, despite suffering burns and injuries from the strike.
He was treated at the scene before being transported to a hospital in stable condition.
Speaking later about the terrifying incident, Wyche explained how the lightning appeared to travel directly through his body.
“The strike went in kind of through my stomach around here and went all the way down through my leg and come back up through the top of my foot,” he said.
The teen reportedly suffered burns and cuts from sharp pieces of wood that exploded from the pine tree during the strike.
Despite the painful injuries, Wyche remained surprisingly optimistic about surviving such a rare and dangerous event.
“I’m probably the unluckiest lucky man alive,” he said.
Returned to Fishing Spot the Next Day
In a move that stunned many people, Wyche reportedly returned to the same location the very next day and continued fishing.
The decision highlighted both his resilience and determination not to let the frightening experience stop him from doing what he enjoys.

Officials warned people to immediately leave lakes, rivers, ponds, and pools when lightning is nearby and strongly advised against sheltering under isolated trees.
The department also urged residents to stay away from fences, power lines, and metal structures during storms.
“If no shelter is available, drop to your knees, crouch low in a ball-like position, tuck your head, and cover your ears. Do not lie flat; minimize your contact with the ground,” the fire department advised.
