UNION TOWNSHIP, NJ — A horrific scene described by witnesses as a “war zone” unfolded at a local Chick-fil-A on Saturday night, leaving one person dead and six others wounded. The attack, which took place in the heart of Union Township, has officially been documented as the 100th mass shooting in the United States this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:00 PM at the Chick-fil-A located in the 2300 block of Route 22. What was supposed to be a typical Saturday night for families and workers turned into a night of chaos and grief as dozens of patrons were forced to scramble for their lives.
Details of the Attack
Authorities arrived at the scene to find a devastating situation. According to the Union County Prosecutor’s Office, one individual was pronounced dead at the scene. Six other victims were rushed to nearby hospitals; fortunately, their injuries are currently considered non-life-threatening.
Eyewitness accounts provided a chilling look at the moments the violence erupted. A rideshare driver nearby reported hearing at least seven rapid-fire gunshots. Even more disturbing, a father of a Chick-fil-A employee told local news outlets that his son saw multiple masked individuals enter the restaurant before opening fire.
“It was a war zone,” the father stated, as he waited anxiously outside the restaurant past 11:00 PM for his son to be released by investigators.
Investigation and Public Safety
As of Sunday afternoon, no arrests have been made. However, law enforcement officials have attempted to ease public anxiety by stating that the shooting does not appear to be a random act of violence.
“The preliminary investigation reveals there is no immediate ongoing threat to the general public,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.
Dashboard camera footage from a nearby vehicle reportedly captured a man fleeing the scene with a pistol in hand, which is currently being analyzed by detectives.
A Community in Mourning
Union Township, a tight-knit community of 60,000 residents located just 17 miles west of New York City, is struggling to process the violence. Mayor Patricia Guerra-Frazier expressed the town’s collective heartbreak on Sunday.
“What should have been an ordinary evening has left families grieving, individuals injured, and our entire township in shock,” the Mayor said. “Violence has no place in the township of Union, and we will continue to stand together.”
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill also confirmed she is in close contact with officials on the ground, offering her thoughts to the victims and their families as the investigation continues.
The National Context
The fact that this incident marks the 100th mass shooting of the year—less than halfway through the calendar—has reignited the fierce national debate over gun control. While many advocates call for stricter regulations, the community of Union is currently focused on healing and finding justice for the victims of Route 22.
