CAMBRIDGE, MA – A chaotic scene unfolded along the Charles River on Monday afternoon as a gunman opened fire on a busy stretch of Memorial Drive, leaving two victims with life-threatening injuries.
Chaos Near MIT and Harvard Square
The incident began shortly after 1:00 p.m. when 46-year-old Tyler Brown was seen walking down the middle of the two-lane road. Witnesses described Brown as acting erratically while carrying an assault rifle.
According to Massachusetts State Police, the suspect fired between 50 to 60 rounds, specifically targeting vehicles. The gunfire sent terrified commuters fleeing from their cars, with some seeking cover under their vehicles to escape the onslaught.
Victims Hospitalized
Two men were struck by the gunfire during the incident:
- A driver for The Ride (an MBTA service).
- A man inside his personal sedan.
Both victims were rushed to a Boston hospital, where they remain in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.
Suspect Subdued
The shooting ended in the middle of Memorial Drive when Brown was shot and neutralized by a Massachusetts State Police trooper and a former Marine who was caught in the traffic jam.
Brown remains hospitalized under police custody. Authorities have not yet announced a date for his arraignment.
Traffic Update
Memorial Drive, which was closed for several hours for a massive forensic investigation, has since been reopened to all traffic. However, residents are advised that a police presence may remain in the area as the investigation continues.
