WEST HEMPSTEAD, NY — What began as a Saturday night meal at a local West Hempstead eatery ended in handcuffs and felony charges for two diners after a dispute over tableware turned violent.
According to the Nassau County Police Department, the incident unfolded around 8:30 p.m. at La Candela Restaurant, located at 205 Hempstead Turnpike.
The Alleged Theft
Authorities state that the two suspects—Jason Thompson, 45, of Oakland Gardens, and Dana Ardezzone, 47, of Queens Village—were dining at the establishment when they allegedly took several tableware items and concealed them inside their to-go bags.
The situation escalated quickly once the pair attempted to leave the premises with the stolen property.
Knife Brandished During Confrontation
When two restaurant employees noticed the missing items and attempted to approach the pair outside the restaurant, the encounter turned physical. Police reports allege that Thompson shoved the employees to the ground.
As the confrontation continued, officials say Thompson brandished a knife, menacing the staff members before police arrived on the scene. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported during the scuffle.
Serious Felony Charges Filed
Nassau County Police arrived shortly after the call and took both individuals into custody without further incident. The legal consequences for the pair are significant:
- Jason Thompson has been charged with:
- First-Degree Robbery
- Second-Degree Menacing
- Fourth-Degree Criminal Possession of a Weapon
- Dana Ardezzone was charged with:

Both suspects are awaiting their next court appearance. Under New York law, First-Degree Robbery is a Class B violent felony, which can carry a substantial prison sentence if convicted.
