CERRITOS, CA – Family and community members gathered Sunday night to mourn 15-year-old Darnell “D.J.” Jones, who was shot and killed outside a local restaurant over the weekend.
Tragic Shooting Near Gridley Road
The incident occurred around 4:00 p.m. Saturday on the 18600 block of Gridley Road, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD).
Authorities state that an argument broke out between Jones, a friend, and an unknown suspect outside a Chick-fil-A. Gunfire erupted, striking the 15-year-old. Jones attempted to run toward the nearby mall for safety but collapsed shortly after. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A Family Mourns
D.J. Jones was the youngest of eight children. His father, Tyrell Jones, shared that his son was a good kid with a big heart who did not deserve this fate.
To help cover unexpected funeral costs, the victim’s sister has established a crowdfunding effort. By Sunday night, local community members had already raised more than $5,000 to support the grieving family.
Suspect At Large
Homicide detectives believe the suspected shooter may also be a teenager. As of Monday, no arrests have been made, and investigators are still working to determine if the suspect and victim were known to each other.
The investigation remains active. LASD officials are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information to contact the Homicide Bureau immediately at (323) 890-5500.
