COLUMBIA, SC — The secret is officially out: South Carolina is the fastest-growing state in the nation.
According to the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the Palmetto State’s population surged by 1.5% between July 2024 and July 2025, outpacing every other state in the country. This rapid expansion is being driven by a massive wave of domestic migration, as Americans trade high-cost coastal cities for South Carolina’s climate, booming economy, and lower cost of living.
The Great Migration: By the Numbers
The scale of the influx is staggering. The South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce (DEW) reports that the state netted 66,622 domestic migrants in just one year. This means that for every person who moved out of South Carolina, nearly two people moved in.
While the state has been on an upward trajectory for years, officials noted that the most explosive growth occurred between 2022 and 2023, when the state added over 100,000 residents in a single 12-month period.
The “Top 10” Counties Feeling the Squeeze
While the growth is a win for the state’s economy, it isn’t happening everywhere. In fact, more than 80% of the population gain since the 2020 Census is concentrated in just 10 specific counties.

Economists credit the surge to a diversifying job market. Urban hubs like Columbia and Greenville are no longer just manufacturing centers; they have evolved into major destinations for healthcare and technology professionals seeking a higher quality of life.
The “Death Spiral” of High-Tax States
South Carolina’s boom is the flip side of a fiscal crisis hitting states like New York, Illinois, and California. Experts describe a “fiscal exodus” where taxpayers are fleeing high-tax environments in favor of “tax-friendly” states like the Carolinas, Florida, and Tennessee.
Mark Wilson, President of the Florida Chamber of Commerce, recently told FOX Business that some high-tax states are losing over $1 million an hour in income as residents move their wealth south.
“IRS migration data is one of the most direct and honest forms of feedback available from taxpayers,” says Andrew Wilford of the National Taxpayers Union Foundation (NTUF). For South Carolina, that feedback is a resounding “yes.”
Infrastructure Challenges Ahead
With South Carolina leading the nation in growth, state leaders are now tasked with managing the strain on infrastructure, schools, and the power grid. As thousands continue to pour into the state every month, the “Laboratories of Democracy” experiment is proving that lower taxes and a robust economy are the ultimate magnets for the American workforce.
