FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. — Health officials in Fresno County are on high alert following a confirmed tuberculosis (TB) exposure at Justin Garza High School. The discovery has triggered a massive contact tracing effort as officials work to contain the spread of the bacterial infection within the school community.
According to the Fresno County Department of Public Health, there is currently one active case of TB associated with the campus. While officials have confirmed the infection, they have declined to specify whether the individual is a student or a staff member, citing privacy concerns.
The Numbers: Widespread Exposure Confirmed
The scale of the exposure is significant. Health records indicate that 169 individuals were identified as having come into contact with the active case. Of those tested so far:
- 22 individuals have tested positive for the TB infection.
- Zero of those 22 are currently showing active symptoms.
- Officials clarified that there are currently no contagious cases on the high school campus.
Those who tested positive but are asymptomatic are likely dealing with Latent TB, a state where the bacteria live in the body without making the person sick or being transmissible to others. However, without treatment, latent TB can develop into the active, contagious form of the disease later in life.
Active vs. Latent TB: What Parents Need to Know
Tuberculosis primarily affects the lungs and spreads through the air when an infected person coughs, speaks, or sneezes. Health officials at the school are emphasizing the difference between the two forms of the disease to prevent panic:
- Latent TB (Inactive): The person has the bacteria in their body but is not sick and cannot spread it to others.
- Active TB: The person is sick and can spread the bacteria to anyone they spend time with.
The symptoms of active TB to watch for include:
- A persistent cough lasting longer than three weeks.
- Coughing up blood or sputum.
- Unexplained fatigue and fever.
- Unintentional weight loss and night sweats.
School and Health Department Response
Justin Garza High School is working in lockstep with Fresno County health investigators to ensure all exposed individuals are screened. Testing and contact tracing remain the priority to ensure no further active cases develop.
School administration is urging all students and staff to monitor their health closely and stay home if they feel sick.
“We are taking every precaution to ensure the safety of our students,” health officials stated. “The focus now is on ensuring those who tested positive receive the necessary medical follow-up to prevent the infection from becoming active.”
