Montebello, California — A devastating early morning house fire in Montebello, California, has left a community grieving after three people, including a child, were killed in what investigators believe may have been a domestic violence-related incident.
The tragic fire broke out Thursday morning and quickly turned into a horrifying scene witnessed by shocked neighbors.
Child and Two Adults Killed in Deadly Fire
Emergency crews responded to a burning home in the 100 block of South 5th Street near West Whittier Boulevard around 4:30 a.m.
When firefighters arrived, the home was already heavily engulfed in flames.
Authorities said a young boy was found dead inside the residence, while two adults — a man and a woman — were discovered outside suffering from severe burn injuries.
Both adults were rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, but police later confirmed they died from their injuries.
Investigators have not publicly released the identities of the victims pending official confirmation from the coroner’s office.
Domestic Violence Suspected
While details remain limited, police say investigators believe the fire may have stemmed from a domestic violence-related incident.
Officials also stated that the man who died is believed to be the suspect in the case.
“We’re trying to find out what happened hours, or even days, leading up to the incident so we can identify a motive,” said Luis Lopez, Montebello police chief.
According to Lopez, the two adults were located outside the home when emergency crews arrived, while the child was found inside the burning residence.
Authorities confirmed the child was believed to be related to the adults, though investigators did not provide additional details about the family relationship.
Neighbors Describe Horrifying Scene
The fire caused panic throughout the neighborhood as flames spread rapidly and even reached a nearby electrical pole, eventually knocking out power in the area after blowing a fuse.
Residents nearby described waking up to terrifying sounds and screams.
“We were sleeping and we just heard a big explosion,” said neighbor Allison Gomez. “We go outside and all my neighbors were screaming, ‘Fire!’ That’s when we saw a lady running out, completely on fire, her skin burning. She was screaming in pain. Screaming for the kid.”
Gomez said the tragedy hit especially hard because she knew the young boy personally and often saw him playing outside in the neighborhood.
“I was just talking to this kid yesterday,” she said. “They told me he sadly passed away. I started crying. I didn’t know how to react. It was such a shock.”
Community Left Mourning
The heartbreaking incident has deeply shaken the Montebello community, with many residents struggling to process the loss of a child and two adults in such a violent and traumatic event.
“It’s a tragedy,” Lopez said. “Anytime there is any loss of life, it’s tragic. When it involves domestic violence, it’s really tragic because it involves a family unit. When you have minors involved, as parents, as folks that have kids, it hurts more. This neighborhood is grieving. It will affect a lot of people for a long time.”
Investigation Continues
Homicide detectives and arson investigators remained at the scene throughout Thursday gathering evidence and trying to piece together what happened before the deadly fire erupted.
Officials are expected to continue interviewing witnesses and examining the property as they work to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the tragedy.
The case remains under active investigation.
